What TO do:
Below is the student process with additional notes on how to administer the WebQuest to students as a teacher.
As a group, you will be constructing a newspaper as if you were in colonial times. You will be using links from the Library of Congress to construct articles about the Boston Tea Party and Yellow Fever. Divide the work however you find it easiest to finish the project.
Boston Tea Party Article
Yellow Fever Article
- Divide students into groups before handing out the assignment. Give students a timeline of the WebQuest: when they will have in class time to work on the assignment and when the assignment is due. Tell students that they will have to work on the WebQuest outside of class. Students will need access to technology and class time to work on the WebQuest.
Boston Tea Party Article
- Read the primary source articles about the Boston Tea Party (Click here to go the PathFinder Page)
- Write a short 300-350 word article on the Boston Tea Party. Your article should include the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the Boston Tea Party. For example, who was involved? Why? What happened?
- Here is a link with guidelines on how to write an article.
- By the time someone is done reading your article, they should be well-informed on the Boston Tea Party as if they were there themselves.
- Use correct spelling and grammar.
- Show students how to access the Pathfinder on the projector. Go over the article with guidelines on how to write an article.
Yellow Fever Article
- Write a short article on the yellow fever. Your article should be 150-200 words long. You are writing to inform others about what happened. Include information on who was involved, why, and what events happened. Also include predictions on what the yellow fever could mean for the future.
- Use the provided link to read about the symptoms and characteristics of Yellow Fever.
- Write an informative article containing what symptoms people should look out for and come up with a mock plan that people should follow if there was to be an outbreak of yellow fever.
- Show students the yellow fever article on the projector. Consider briefly going over the article and/or give a overview of yellow fever. Review how to write an article from the Boston Tea Party article.
- The newspaper must also contain an illustration section you can either create a political cartoon relating to one of the articles or draw a detailed illustration like the image examples from the Library of Congress.
- After you have written both articles and made the cartoon publish your works into a newspaper template here is a link that you can fidn a template to work from http://www.makemynewspaper.com/free-newspaper-templates
- Emphasize to students that their political cartoons do not have to be perfect. Tell students they just need to get their message across, but they willnot be graded on their artistic ability. Show students the newspaper template and go over how to use it.
