On May 10, 1773 the Tea Act was passed by Great Britain. The act forced a tax on all tea purchased by the colonies in order to help a struggling British East India Company. This act was a follow up to the Townshend Act that Britain put into place years before.
In response to Tea Act a number of members of the Sons of Liberty (a secret society founded in order to fight against the taxation of the colonies by the British and to protect the rights of the colonists) snuck onto a British East India Company ship on December 16,1773. The men, disguised as Native Americans, proceeded to dump a whole shipment of tea into the Boston Harbor.
This event lead to harsh punishment by the British, the Intolerable Acts. Quickly following these events tensions continued to rise and eventually boil over into the American Revolutionary War in 1775.
